The Directors Guild of America recently announced their nominees for their annual DGA awards. The DGA’s are yet another high-profile stop on the road to the Academy Awards on February 24th. The categories here include film, television and commercials; however, for the sake of this blog, I have chosen to include only the feature film categories. And the nominees are:

OUTSTANDING DIRECTORIAL ACHIEVEMENT IN FEATURE FILM

Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born

Alfonso Cuarón, Roma

Peter Farrelly, Green Book

Spike Lee, BlackKklansman

Adam McKay, Vice

OUTSTANDING DIRECTORIAL ACHIEVEMENT OF A FIRST-TIME FEATURE FILM DIRECTOR

Bo Burnham, Eighth Grade

Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born

Carlos López Estrada, Blindspotting

Matthew Heineman, A Cold War

Boots Riley, Sorry To Bother You

OUTSTANDING DIRECTORIAL ACHIEVEMENT IN DOCUMENTARY

Morgan Neville, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Ramell Ross, Hale Country This Morning, This Evening

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhaleyi & Jimmy Chin, Free Solo

Tim Wardle, Three Identical Strangers

Betsy West & Julie Cohen, RBG

The winners will be announced with the DGA holds their awards ceremony February 2nd.

Personally, I’m excited to see Carlos López Estrada get some love for his work. If you read my top ten movies of 2018, then you know Blindspotting cracked my top five. I love that movie.

I’m also kind of shocked to see Boots Riley’s name get a mention. I didn’t care for his movie, but more importantly, I haven’t seen Sorry To Bother You thrown around for much awards consideration this season. If it were up to me, I definitely would have replaced him with Ari Aster, who did incredible work on Hereditary.

Lastly, I’m not the least bit shocked to see Bryan Singer’s name not listed. After everything, he’s been accused of and all the drama behind the scenes of Bohemian Rhapsody, not even the cast or producers are talking about him.

Those are my thoughts, but what do you think about this year’s DGA Awards nominees? Are you shocked by any of them? Will you be rooting for any director in particular? I want to know your thoughts, so hit me up in the comments below!
