We just can’t seem to keep out of his swamp. I’m speaking of course about the beloved green ogre, Shrek.

THE STORY

Via Variety, both Shrek and Puss in Boots are getting rebooted by Chris Meledandri. You might not know his name, but you definitely know his work. Meledandri is the founder and CEO of Illumination, the animation studio behind such hits as the Despicable Me movies and The Secret Life of Pets.

If you’re a die-hard “Shrekker” reading this news and your first reaction is “BUT NOBODY ELSE CAN PLAY SHREK,” there’s good news for you. According to the article, Meledandri plans on keeping the original voice cast. This includes Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas. Meledandri explains:

“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations…”

Meledandri goes on to say that the challenge with this project is creating something that’s not just another film in a line of sequels. The idea here is to start the series over using the same voices.

THE SPIN

It’s refreshing to hear that Meledandri doesn’t plan on messing with the casting and that his focus is on bringing the characters and world of Shrek to a newer generation without handcuffing themselves to what’s come before.

As for the idea of more Shrek films, it only makes sense. This is one of the most profitable animated franchises ever. Together, the first five (including Puss in Boots) have grossed over $3.5 billion worldwide with each averaging just over $700 million. Now that the generation who grew up with these films can introduce their own kids to these new Shrek films, the potential upside here is still as strong as ever.

So what do you make of this news? Are you a fan of the Shrek films? Does knowing all this make you more or less excited to see Illumination’s take? I want to hear from you so hit me up in the comments below.
